Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen Tour (130 km / 6 hrs)

Departing around 10 a.m. via NH 31A, you’ll have the chance to explore some beautiful sights along the way:

  • Kabi Lungstok

A historic site along the North Sikkim Highway, Kabi Lungstok marks the location where a friendship treaty was signed between Lepcha Chief Te-Kung-Tek and Bhutia Chief Khey-Bum-Sar. A small stone pillar commemorates this significant event.

Seven Sister Waterfalls

These stunning waterfalls descend in seven stages, surrounded by dense forests and lush mountains. The breathtaking scenery offers a

perfect backdrop for photos. The Tourism Department has set up a waiting shed and cafeteria here, allowing you to relax and savor the natural beauty.

Naga Waterfalls

Located near the confluence of Lachen-Chu and Lachung-Chu at Chungthang, Naga Waterfalls is renowned for its picturesque setting. The ice-cold waters flow gracefully amidst a tranquil forest, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful break.

Day 3: Lachen to Lachung and Gurudongmar Lake Excursion

Gurudongmar Lake

Your journey begins with a drive to Gurudongmar Lake, located at an altitude of 17,800 ft (70 km / 3 hours from Lachen). This awe-inspiring lake is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. Its milky blue waters remain largely frozen throughout the year, but legend has it that when Guru Padmasambhava visited, he blessed a portion of the lake, preventing it from freezing even in winter. Many visitors take home this "blessed" water as a cherished memento.

Lachung

After visiting the lake, head to Lachung, which means "Small Pass." Nestled at an elevation of 9,600 ft near the Tibetan border, this picturesque area is adorned with snowy mountains, tall coniferous trees, and sparkling streams—a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Upon arrival in Lachung, check in to your hotel, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the rugged mountains. The evening is free for you to unwind, explore, or savor local delicacies such as hot Thukpas and Momos while enjoying the tranquil ambiance illuminated by the soft glow of the moonlight.

Day 4: Yumthang Valley Excursion and Transfer to Gangtok

Awaken to a beautiful morning in Lachung, where the golden sun brightens the landscape. Enjoy your morning tea with a view of the majestic mountains. After breakfast, prepare for an exciting excursion to Yumthang Valley.

Yumthang Valley

Known as the "Valley of Flowers," Yumthang Valley is a stunning destination filled with 24 species of Rhododendrons that bloom in May, while in winter, it transforms into a winter wonderland. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, covering 43 sq. km, is rich  in  diverse  flora and provides a scenic backdrop with the Yumthang  River flowing through it. The journey to the valley features cascading waterfalls and lush meadows, making it a feast for the senses.

Zero Point (Yumesamdong)

If time and conditions permit, visit Zero Point, located at an altitude of 15,300 ft (23 km from Yumthang Valley). This spot marks the last outpost of civilization, where three rivers converge against a backdrop of snow-clad peaks. Please note that visiting Zero Point incurs an additional cost and requires a permit, and it is advisable for tourists with respiratory conditions to refrain from visiting due to high altitude sickness risks.

Return to Gangtok

After exploring Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, begin your journey back to Gangtok. Arrive in the evening and settle into your hotel, where you can relax after your adventurous day.

Day 5: Gangtok Sightseeing

As the golden rays of the sun illuminate the charming city of Gangtok, it's time to indulge in a hearty breakfast before setting off on your day of exploration.

Tashi View Point

Start your day with a visit to Tashi View Point, located about 8 km from Gangtok. Built by Tashi Namgyal, this viewpoint offers a breathtaking panorama of Mt. Kanchenjunga on clear days. With binoculars and telescopes available, you can enjoy unobstructed views of the majestic mountains and the lush forests surrounding the area.

Gonjang Monastery

Next, head to Gonjang Monastery, situated just 6 km from Gangtok near Tashi View Point. Established in 1981 by H.E. Tingkye Gonjang Rimpoche, this monastery follows the Jangter tradition of the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Experience the tranquility and spiritual ambiance of this sacred place.

Do-drul Chorten

Continue your journey to Do-drul Chorten, a significant stupa built in 1945 by the Venerable Trullshi Rimpoche, head of the Nyingma order. Inside the stupa, you’ll find a complete set of religious artifacts, including the Dorjee Phurba and Kang Gyur relics. Surrounding the Chorten are 108 prayer wheels inscribed with mantras, making it one of the most important Chortens in Sikkim.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Visit the renowned Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, a treasure trove of rare Lepcha, Tibetan, and Sanskrit manuscripts, along with exquisite statues and Thankas. This prestigious research institute also features a

museum showcasing over 200 Buddhist icons and a magnificent image of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of knowledge and wisdom.

Hur Hurray Dara

Next, head to Hur Hurray Dara (Nam Nang View Point), a serene area that offers stunning views of the lush green forests and valleys. Less 
crowded than other spots, it’s perfect for a peaceful morning or evening stroll, immersing yourself in nature’s beauty.

Tsukla Khang Monastery

Explore Tsukla Khang Monastery, located within the Tsuklakhang Royal Palace complex of the former Chogyal rulers of Sikkim. This monastery showcases typical Sikkimese architecture adorned with vibrant murals and images of the Buddhist pantheon.

White Memorial Hall

Visit the White Memorial Hall, a two-story structure built in 1932 to honor Sir John Claude White, Sikkim's first political officer. With its British architectural style and historical significance, this hall is located on a scenic ridge.

Gangtok Ropeway
